Anguish, Outrage and Opportunist: Thousands Protest in Columbia Over Killing of George Floyd

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Protesters standing in solidarity with George Floyd march to the South Carolina State House.

The last 48 hours have been extremely hard. I have found myself taxed not only as a photojournalist, but as a black man and as a human. I hurt for so many reasons. I hurt that there's yet another unarmed black man killed by the hands of law enforcement in this country. I hate to see the comments in the news sections that seem to show that many people that don't look like me seem to care. I hurt seeing this country in the state that it's in. I hurt for my friends and loved ones in law enforcement knowing that incidents like these only makes it harder for everyone. I hurt to see all of the beautiful cities on fire and seeing small business affected. I definitely hate to see my own city in conflict but at the same time, these are all symptoms of a greater problem. There's so many moments, so many things I can talk about but I'm just spent. Day 1. (May 30, 2020)

Day 2. (May 31, 2020)

I called it quits early. The mental and physical exhaustion from Day 1 had taken its toll.
